Demi Lovato just gave one of her first interviews since her tumultuous split from Max Ehrich, and you may want to be on the lookout for some new music.
During the new interview with the Today show on November 12, the “Commander in Chief” singer opened up about her “rollercoaster” of a year, stopping short of speaking directly about her breakup from Ehrich in September.
“[This year has] been such a rollercoaster,” Lovato told Jenna Bush Hager, per Us Weekly. “I mean, honestly, for me, the beginning of the year started out, I was on this trajectory to have a pretty eventful career, and I was planning my comeback.”
Instead, she released an anti-Trump banger and experienced a whirlwind romance that ended….quite messily. Last we heard, a source told E! News that Lovato is “having all sorts of issues with Max not leaving her alone.”
Still, Demi Lovato shared that although 2020 didn’t work out quite as she had expected, there were some important takeaways. “I think the most important thing that I’ve learned is how much I am OK with myself and loving myself,” the singer said. “It wasn’t until this year that I really started exploring the things that bring joy to my life in little ways.”
As for her feelings on Ehrich? You may have to wait for the next album—or stream her recent breakup anthem, “Still Have Me.”
“When I write my songs—when I go to the studio and record them, it’s a very cathartic and therapeutic experience for me,” Lovato explained. “Anytime I go through something, especially when I don’t say things publicly or comment on certain situations, I just let my music comment on it.”
“I’m a mess and I’m still broken, but I’m finding my way back,” Lovato sings in “Still Have Me,” which was released six days after calling off her engagement from Ehrich. “And it feels like someone’s stolen all the light I ever had.”
But she hits us with a more optimistic chorus. “I don’t have much but at least I still have me and that’s all I need,” she sings. “So take my faith, but at least I still believe and that’s all I need. I don’t have much but at least I still have me.”
As for those of you wondering how Ehrich feels about the whole thing, all you have to do is look at his social media posts or check your local beach.
