The first Zombieland movie was an incredible hit that blended the somehow still popular zombie movie with humor and no small amount of action. It was the sort of unique hit that you know is going to spawn a sequel. And yet, it’s been a full decade since the first film and the follow-up Zombieland: Double Tap is only just now about to hit theaters. It’s a significantly longer wait than you would expect to see from a studio, but as you might have guessed. It’s all Deadpool‘s fault.
The first Zombieland movie was written by the dynamic duo of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and while the pair had long been considering a Zombieland sequel, the two got a bit distracted in recent years as another project of theirs, Deadpool, became an even bigger hit that spawned a sequel that was put on the fast track. In a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Zombieland co-star Jesse Eisenberg admitted that this was a major factor in the Zombieland sequel delay, because everybody involved wanted the original writers to handle the script for the new movie. According to Eisenberg…
It wouldn’t have been that difficult for the studio to bring in new writers to handle the new script. Of course, that can be a dicey situation. You’ll get another movie called Zombieland much faster, but it’s a movie that might very likely look and sound quite different from the original. When a studio hits on a successful formula. one wants to change that formula as little as possible in an attempt to repeat the same success. That means working with the same writers.
While Zombieland: Double Tap may be hitting theaters later than many, studio included, likely hoped, the good news is that it is arriving at all. One certainly hopes that it will be worth the wait. Check out Jesse Eisenberg’s full comments on the movie from his Tonight Show appearance in the video below.
Based on what Jesse Eisenberg has said in the past, the cast was all waiting for the best script, and that this movie is that. Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese’s last sequel, Deadpool 2 was viewed by many, myself included to be better than the original, so hopefully the writers have followed suit here as well. We’ll find out when Zombieland: Double Tap hits theaters October 18.
