J.J. Abrams Knew Early On How The Rise Of Skywalker Would End

Imagine seeing the original Star Wars as a 10-year-old and then getting to be the mastermind behind closing out the now iconic Skywalker Saga almost 40 years later. J.J. Abrams reinvigorated the franchise with 2015’s Force Awakens before stepping away to let Rian Johnson take the helm for The Last Jedi. The writer/director gets to be that guy and deliver its conclusion with Rise of Skywalker.

Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker is in the process of being cut in the editing room ahead of its December release. Turns out, J.J. Abrams knew exactly how he wanted the last moments of the saga to go for quite a long time. In his words:

Sounds like we can expect an epic and well-thought out conclusion to Rise of Skywalker that has been in the works in J.J. Abrams’ brain for while now. It should put fans at ease to know the ending to the highly-anticipated conclusion wasn’t a last minute decision or afterthought for the writer/director. The end of a film can show the most lasting images for audiences. Abrams sounds eager to show it to fans.

Movie and TV fans have seen a few important endings this year alone with the finale of Game of Thrones and Avengers: Endgame. Daisy Ridley has weighed in on how it will compare, simply saying Rise of Skywalker will be less controversial than the end of Game of Thrones. President of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy recently called it “an incredibly good time.”

He’s certainly become an expert at cryptic answers! Among word about the end of Rise of Skywalker, J.J. also teased Palpatine’s less-than-cuddly return to the franchise and how “mind-blowing” Adam Driver is as Kylo Ren. Welp, December 20 can’t come soon enough! Keep up with everything heading to the big screen this year with our 2019 movie release date schedule.
