Now that the secret is out – meaning that the world has seen Avengers: Endgame more times than we can count – Marvel Studios is happy to finally release an official still of what has to be in the running for happiest ending to a 2019 movie. That’s right, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) dancing with his soulmate Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) to the tune “It’s Been a Long Long Time”
Now think back to the level of secrecy that enveloped every step of Avengers: Endgame through the production cycle. If Hayley Atwell so much as breathed a HINT that she was going to be in the latest Avengers movie (let alone in multiple scenes, including a time-travel flashback AND the final shot), her family would be held hostage by Kevin Feige. And yet, here’s a clean shot of the final scene from Avengers: Endgame, and nobody bats an eye. What a difference a few months make.

It’s the ending that Marvel fans deserve. Before Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) put his plane into the ice, saving the East Coast from a massive explosion, Captain America told Peggy he probably was going to be late for that dance. By “late,” he meant decades. But thanks to some time-travel trickery, Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely figured out a very cool and emotional way for Steve and Peggy to finally get that dance, and it was the ideal final shot for the closure of the Infinity Saga.
That’s not to say that their story is over, though. Over on Disney+, Marvel Studios is ramping up the animated What If? series, and they already have teased that Peggy Carter is going to be a lead character in one of the first episodes, and she will become Captain Britain. Plot twist! How will Steve fit in to that narrative?
